Division of Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Program

Established in 1967, the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) was one of the first in the country. CHAM’s Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Program combines a rich history of innovation and mentorship with state-of-the-art clinical, research and educational experiences to train future leaders in the field of adolescent medicine.

Over the course of our three-year program, fellows train in a variety of clinical and formal educational settings and participate in structured research opportunities and quality-improvement projects. Our core faculty members mentor each fellow to support their clinical and scholarly pursuits and are committed to the success of our trainees both during and after fellowship.

Why our program could be right for you

The mission of the Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Program at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is to provide a comprehensive clinical and research experience, centered on our largely resource-poor, high-poverty patient population, so that fellows may succeed in an academic position and have the necessary skills to become leaders in the field of adolescent medicine.

Children's Hospital at Montefiore

Located on our Moses Campus, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is a premier academic children’s hospital nationally renowned for its clinical excellence, innovative research and commitment to training the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists.

Even as it provides outstanding tertiary care to patients from all over the world, CHAM stands firmly rooted in its local community. This discipline gives it a charm and familiarity that really makes it feel like a CHAMily.

I believe that every teen deserves quality and accessible reproductive healthcare. I am lucky to train at a facility that’s dedicated to that mission.

Noor Al-Husayni, MD

Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Graduate 2021

From the second I matched at CHAM, I felt like part of the CHAMily. The diverse patient population and variety of clinical exposures in core adolescent medicine, from reproductive to transgender health, make CHAM an amazing place to learn and grow.

First year:

The first year is focused on developing clinical competency in adolescent medicine subspecialty topics including reproductive and gynecologic health, eating disorders, gender care and mental and behavioral health. First year fellows have 4-5 half day clinical sessions per week in the adolescent medicine clinic at CHAM and do 5-6 weeks per year of inpatient adolescent medicine service. First year fellows also rotate through electives in young men’s health, gender care, and a school-based health center at a local high school. Fellows also have the opportunity to pursue 1-2 electives in their area of interest during their first year. First year fellows will establish a research question and mentorship team.

Second and third year:

The second and third year is focused on developing expertise in subspecialty adolescent medicine practice, developing proficiency in LARC placement and growing as a researcher and teacher. Second and third year fellows have 2-3 half day clinical sessions per week in the adolescent medicine clinic at CHAM and do 6-7 weeks of inpatient adolescent medicine service. Second and third year fellows rotate through electives in college health, LARC clinic, the OVAL center at Montefiore (focusing on STI diagnosis and management), substance use treatment programs, and sports medicine. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue 3-4 additional electives in their area of interest. More time is dedicated to scholarly work. Second and third year fellows gather and analyze data for their research project and publish and present their work. Second and third year fellows also design and implement a quality improvement project under the supervision of faculty.

Training Pathways:

Fellows have opportunities to participate in additional educational pathways including: addiction medicine mentored training program, advocacy track, MS (clinical research training program through Albert Einstein), MPH (through Albert Einstein), Innovation Biodesign Training Program (through Montefiore Einstein).

Other scholarly and educational activities:

Fellows frequently have opportunities to participate in scholarly activities such as contributing to textbook chapters and review articles, developing educational materials, teaching residents and medical students, and lead educational sessions for community organizations. Fellows also regularly attend two or more national conferences, such as the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine Annual Meeting and the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Annual Clinical and Research Meeting, among others. In addition to our divisional educational curriculum (which includes a core lecture series, divisional seminars on specialty topics, a division-specific research seminar, and interdisciplinary and interdivisional case conferences), fellows participate in FAMLI (Fellows in Adolescent Medicine Learning Initiative), a consortium of several adolescent medicine fellowship programs that provides a weekly lecture series to augment existing fellow education in line with American Board of Pediatrics content specifications.
